Summer Reading

Build a Better World: Summer Reading 2017

This year, our annual summer reading program will run from May 18 through July 28.

We offer three reading programs for youth from birth to grade 12: Baby Bookworms, Kids Read, and Teens Read. Kids and teens win prizes as they track the number of days they read at least 20 minutes, while babies do early literacy activities.

Did you know students can lose 2 months of reading achievement in the summer if they don't keep their mind sharp? Help us build a better world of strong readers by encouraging your child to read regularly through the school break!

Teachers and community leaders: want to show young people the fun and benefits of summer reading? Use this slideshow and notes page to share our program at your convenience!

Baby Bookworms

Infants & toddlers, birth through age 2

You and your little one will get an early learning activity log with fun ideas for talking, singing, reading, and playing.

These fun activities promote the early literacy skills necessary to create young readers.

Complete 15 of the listed activities to earn prizes:

  • A board book
  • A bath toy
  • A coupon for a free book
  • A coupon to a local business

Kids Read

Ages 3 through students entering grade 5

To participate, read at least 20 minutes a day. You can track your progress online or with a reading log available at any Wichita Public Library.

You can count anything you read to yourself or to someone else, or that someone reads to you.

For every 10 days you read 20 minutes or more, you earn a prize such as:

  • Coupons for free food and entertainment
  • A free book
  • Entries for the grand prize drawing
  • Your name inside a library book of your choice

All Kids Read finishers who read 40 days or more will be entered in a special drawing for a grand prize. Each extra 10 days of reading you do will give you an extra entry!

Teens Read

Students entering grades 6-12

To participate, read at least 20 minutes a day. You can track your progress online or with a reading log available at any Wichita Public Library.

You can count any reading you do, whether it's in a book, a newspaper, on a website, or in a magazine!

For every 10 days you read 20 minutes or more, you earn a prize such as:

  • Coupons for free food and entertainment
  • A free book
  • Your name inside a library book of your choice
  • Grand prize entry for a $100 Amazon gift card
