Summer Reading Volunteers

Since 1990, Summer Reading Teen Volunteers have been an integral part of carrying out the Wichita Public Library's Summer Reading Program. Teens can earn more than 30 hours of volunteer service over the course of the program.

Summer Reading Teen Volunteers perform many tasks! They help families and peers enroll in summer reading and collect prizes. They tidy Library areas, can assist with shelving, prepare crafts, cut paper, and organize items. They can also help Library staff with special events and programs.

Volunteers will be assigned to one location for the summer. You may indicate your 1st choice and 2nd choice on your application. Volunteers are not being accepted at the Alford and Rockwell branches due to their respective remodeling projects.

Summer Reading Volunteer Program Requirements

  • You must be entering grades 8-12 in the fall.
  • You need to be dependable and show up for your shifts. Make sure you have a ride worked out.
  • Ask your parent or guardian for permission.
  • Make sure you can commit to at least six weeks of volunteering 2-6 hours per week.
  • Be available to work between May 22-July 31 – let us know on your application if you have a camp or vacation scheduled.

The 2025 Teen Summer Volunteer Program application is now available for download. Completed applications will be accepted by the Library beginning March 21.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

Needed: Teens just like YOU who can help shape teen services here at the library. Members of our Teen Advisory Board meet once a month at the Advanced Learning Library and are given the opportunity to discuss and share their ideas about teen programming, the teen collection, and other library services. Along the way, you'll make new friends, earn volunteer hours, and become involved in the community. Make a difference – join the Library's TAB! Open to teens in grades 6-12.

Interested in joining? Email Teen Librarian Lexi Ternes () for additional info!
