Book Review: The Book Thief

Posted on 10/30/2024 by Harper R.

Do you want a book that's unpredictable, comforting, entertaining, historical, and has depth all at the same time? The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is an amazing book set in Munich, Germany in a poor neighborhood on Himmel Street during World War II. It's about morality, love, death and a young girl named Liesel Meminger.

The Book Thief follows the years of Liesel's life from ages 9 to 15, where she is fostered by the Hubermann family and must survive. Liesel's town is being threatened by bombings; she bonds with people while sitting in a bunker during a bombing. She grows to love her foster mama and papa and her neighbors on Himmel Street.

The Book Thief is especially interesting because Liesel is able to miraculously survive situations where others couldn't. The Book Thief goes deep and connects with the reader in a way that other books can't. Liesel is a person you can relate to and hearing her story makes The Book Thief a page turner you won't forget.

The way the author writes relationships between the characters, you can hear the intent of their every word. This book tells the story of a family braving the Nazis by hiding a desperate Jewish person that Liesel grows extremely close with. I could not put this book down and you won't either. The Book Thief is one of the best books I've read by far and is a great historical fiction book to read if you want to learn about Germany during World War II and the hardships people went through during the War. It is written in a way where you need to process the symbolism of every sentence, and how it is important to the book, because each sentence was made specifically for a purpose.

I recommend The Book Thief to anyone looking for an entertaining book to read over time or all at once. It is truly an amazing work of art by Markus Zusak that is a must read at some time in your life.
