Each year, libraries across the country recognize Banned Books Week. According to the American Library Association's website, Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. The idea behind Banned Books Week is to raise attention to the harms of censorship and to promote the freedom to read.
Your Wichita Public Library will celebrate with programs and book displays throughout the week. Here’s what you can expect:
Banned Books Week Art Party Sunday, September 22, 1:30-4 p.m., Advanced Learning Library Join us for the Banned Books Week kickoff party! Celebrate Banned Books Week with an art party hosted by Wichita Public Library in partnership with Harvester Arts. Attendees will have the opportunity to design their own banned book covers. After, the Library will display them at the Advanced Learning Library from Sept. 22-29. StudioJenVenn will be present to host an interactive "Bring Your Own Shirt" block printing lab. Bring a light colored t-shirt or canvas bag to create your own Banned Books Week print. Supplies are limited – register by Sept. 21.
Banned Books Week Bingo Monday, September 23, 6-7 p.m., Advanced Learning Library Join us for a fun night of bingo and celebrate the freedom to read with this special Banned Books Week edition of Bingo! This event is free, but registration is required.
Silent Book Club - Banned Books Week Thursday, September 26, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Advanced Learning Library Join the Silent Book Club in celebrating the right to read during Banned Books Week! Readers are encouraged to bring or borrow challenged books.
