This book follows a character named Yancey who has been in and out of foster care since he was young. He has a recently been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, which includes having other alters (or personalities; this illness used to be called multiple personality disorder but has since changed to DID which is more accurate.)
I knew nothing about DID before I read this book, but the book explained it very well. I find it good that a YA novel brings attention to this disorder in a way that is not fear mongering but teaches you to accept people for who they are. I really enjoyed that this book taught me about what it is like to live life with DID. This book made me think from different perspectives that I had never considered.
This book brings up harmful stereotypes and tells you why they are incorrect and hurtful. I really liked this because it teaches you about real medical conditions with a story.
While the book has plenty of facts, there are also some sci-fi elements. I usually don’t enjoy sci-fi, but I really enjoyed this book. In this book, Yancey meets a boy named River who is looking for his sister who goes to school in Wichita. Soon it is revealed that River and his sister have speedily powers and are considered "espers." Soon Yancey finds out that he is also an esper and joins River on the journey to find his sister.
This book blends real life with sci-fi in a way that teaches you about very real issues that most people do not understand. It also helps break harmful stereotypes while taking the reader on adventures through Kansas towns. It is sci-fi mixed with mystery and real facts. This story takes place in a mix of real and fictitious places, but it really shows the varied landscape of Kansas.
Here is a quote from Kyra Croninger's author biography that I think perfectly summarizes how she approaches her works that include real world issues:
With bachelor's degrees in history and theology, Kyra enjoys putting her research skills to work in her fiction projects and values the importance of storytelling in understanding the complexity and beauty of our vast human experiences.
You can really tell that Croninger put a lot of research into this book.
She is an illustrator, too. You can find her work on her Instagram account, @hugyourducks, which has some beautiful illustrations of her book characters. You can also buy this book on Amazon, Kindle, or check it out from the Wichita Public Library.
Overall, I give this book 5/5 stars! This is a truly an amazing book that I absolutely loved reading. It really kept my attention and made me not want to stop reading. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out to continue the amazing adventure that started in this book.
