The Dr. Ronald W. Walters Branch Library is located in southeast Wichita, the newest branch of the public library in that area following previous locations at Lincoln & George Washington Boulevard (1956-79) and at Colvin Elementary School (1978-2003). It replaced a library that had been located in the Linwood Park recreation center.
The branch is named for Dr. Ronald W. Walters (1938-2010), an author, speaker, and scholar of African American politics. As president of the Wichita youth chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. in July 1958, he organized the Dockum Drug Store Sit-In, one of the first lunch counter sit-ins of the civil rights movement.
