Academy Awards® Short Film Festival

Welcome to the 39th Academy Awards Short Film Festival, presented by the Wichita Public Library. Each year, the Library screens the nominated short films in the live action, animation and documentary categories. To qualify as a short film for Academy Award consideration, films must be less than 40 minutes. Films are not rated and may not be suitable for all audience.

This Year's Nominees

    • A former captain with PTSD who lives with his daughter is pulled out of his isolation by the unexpected arrival of a stranded whale.

    • Three bald brothers go on a trip to Istanbul for hair transplant surgery and grapple with their fears about aging.

    • When the creator of an '80s children's TV series dies, the three tiny stars are all alone in continuing to make episodes for the fans.

    • A group of kids at their holiday camp freak out when they witness adults of all ages kissing in public.

    • A lonely boy who, after eating magical candies, gains the ability to communicate with inanimate objects, animals and even people.

    • A passenger train is stopped by paramilitary forces in an ethnic cleansing operation. Only one passenger dares stand up to them.

    • A gifted girl who works in a garment factory is offered a chance to attend school, forcing her to make a heart-wrenching decision.

    • A young couple face up to and deal with a dangerous immigration process.

    • After repeatedly failing Captchas, music producer Lara becomes obsessed with a disturbing question: could she be a robot?

    • When young Litha is introduced to the magic of a game reserve by the last remaining ranger, they are ambushed by poachers. In the ensuing battle to save the rhinos, Litha discovers a terrible secret.

    • First graders in a Tokyo elementary school are presented with a challenge for the final semester: perform “Ode to Joy" at the ceremony for new incoming first graders.

    • This unsung hero story celebrates trailblazing musician Orin O'Brien and the double bass she plays.

    • John Henry Ramirez is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. During incarceration, Ramirez tried to reach out to his victim's son while also preparing to say goodbye to his family.

    • A 2018 police shooting in Chicago is reconstructed as a synchronized split-screen montage from various sources, including surveillance, CCTV, Dashboard and body-camera footage.

    • Four years after being shot with an AR-15 in her high school, Samantha Fuentes reckons with existential questions of hatred and justice as she prepares to confront her shooter.
